If you spent this summer staring at a yellow lawn or trying to force a spade into rock-hard borders, I’m going to say something a little controversial: the traditional British garden is dead.
Now, don’t panic! As a qualified horticulturist, I love our classic gardens. But we have to face facts—our climate has changed. Here in Stoke-on-Trent, we are increasingly dealing with a cycle of extremely wet winters followed by baking summer droughts. If we stubbornly stick to the old ways of doing things, we’re just going to end up with a clay desert in a few years.
But here is the good news: we can absolutely keep the spirit of the traditional garden alive; we just need to adapt our methods. While the RHS offers fantastic advice on drought-resistant garden design, putting those principles into practice on our tough Potteries clay takes a bit of local know-how.
The Potteries Clay and The Raised Bed Paradox
If you garden in Stoke, you know our heavy clay soil. It’s fantastic for holding nutrients, but in our new climate, it acts like a swimming pool in January (drowning your plant roots) and bakes solid in August.
The easiest way to save your borders and veg patches from the winter wet is by building raised beds. Lifting your plants out of the ground soil allows you to mix in organic matter, improving drainage and protecting the roots from drowning.
However, there is a catch. Because raised beds drain so beautifully, they dry out incredibly fast in the summer heat. So, how do we water them without wasting every drop?

The Deep-Root Funnel Hack
One of the most frustrating things I see as a gardener is people diligently collecting rainwater all winter, only to pour it over the top of their soil in July and watch 50% of it evaporate in the sun. Surface watering also encourages shallow, lazy roots that die the second a drought hits.
Instead, we need to water the deep roots. We do this by installing a perforated pipe through the lower soil of your raised bed—think of it like underfloor heating, but for hydration. We bring just one end of the pipe up to the surface in the corner and cap it with a discreet funnel.
Why is this genius?
- Zero Evaporation: Water goes straight to the roots where it’s needed.
- Beats the Hosepipe Ban: According to Water UK’s official hosepipe ban guidelines, Temporary Use Bans restrict using mains-fed hosepipes—not watering cans filled from the tap. By pouring your watering can directly into the funnel, you stay 100% compliant while ensuring every drop reaches the roots.
Harvesting the Winter Floods
To really adapt, we need to capture that torrential winter rain. Forget the tiny plastic water butts; for a proper garden, you want an IBC tank (a 1,000-litre container) to collect sufficient rainwater over the winter.
I know what you’re thinking: Kathryn, those are incredibly ugly. But they don’t have to be! We build decorative wooden lathwork, trellis frames, or reed screening around them, planting climbing hydrangeas or honeysuckle over the front. Not only does this hide the tank, but as Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s gardening guides highlight, vertical greening provides crucial shelter and nectar for local pollinators during summer droughts.
Fixing the Lawn (Without the Clumps)
Finally, we need to talk about your grass. The manicured, closely shaven lawn is a thing of the past. Scalping your grass exposes the soil to the baking sun. Simply raising your mower blade to leave the grass 3–4 inches tall creates a micro-climate of shade that traps morning dew.
If your lawn is still struggling, we can overseed it with drought-tolerant turf fescue grasses. Unlike the thirsty ryegrass found in older lawns, this modern grass looks traditional but sends roots up to three feet deep, easily surviving the August heat without creating ugly clumps.
